Ohio State football: Sorting out the RB room
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team has plenty of capable running backs for the 2021 season. Which ones will get carries and which ones will see the bench?
Running back is one of the legacy positions within the Ohio State football program. There have been so many great ones in the past. Archie Griffin, Eddie George, Maurice Clarett, Ezekiel Elliott, and J.K. Dobbins all come to mind as excellent running backs.
The Buckeyes are looking for the next one to step up. With Trey Sermon now gone, Master Teague is the lone back with significant snaps to his name coming into the 2021 season. But is he the one to beat for the starting job or will that honor go to someone else?
What I think Ryan Day will do is begin the season with Teague as the starter. Teague has the most experience in the offense so far. I don’t see Teague being the starter for very long though. He could be replaced by the fourth or fifth game depending on how well TreyVeon Henderson plays.
Henderson is a stud five-star true freshman that is the most talented back the Buckeyes have. He is too good to leave on the bench and will get carries from day one. He will probably garner a good 10-15 carries a game before eventually taking over as the starter.
Miyan Williams is likely to see some spot carries as well. Williams showed some potential late in the National Championship game when both Sermon and Teague were out. The coaches like his burst and change of direction. He will definitely be the primary back used once the game reaches the blowout stage.
Evan Pryor will probably only see carries in blowouts. He is the other freshman back in this recruiting class. Steele Chambers probably won’t see any at all and is a candidate to transfer. There are only so many carries and snaps to go around.
This room is stacked for years to come and should be one of the position groups that Buckeye fans have faith in. They are going to be really good at running the football
