Ohio State football: Jameson Williams transfer opens door for young WRs
By Ryan Stano
With Jameson Williams entering the transfer portal, the opportunity for young receivers to make an immediate impact on the Ohio State football team has been granted.
The Ohio State football team will have one less receiver on its roster as Jameson Williams has decided to enter the transfer portal. Williams was not utilized much for the Buckeyes in his career, only catching a total of 15 passes. He did score a big touchdown against Clemson last year though.
Williams will be moving on and is the second receiver to do so after Mookie Cooper also decided to leave. With Williams leaving, that gives young receivers an opportunity to get some playing time for the Buckeyes. Jaxon-Smith Njigba and Julian Fleming were already going to push him for time, and now they are solidly ahead.
Perhaps no receiver benefits from this more than Marvin Harrison Jr. Harrison Jr. was the star of the Spring Game on offense and has already impressed coaches with his abilities as well as his maturity. He could slide into that fifth receiver spot and get some meaningful snaps this season.
This is a transfer that doesn’t really hurt the Buckeyes offensively. He was not a true weapon that was going to be utilized. It does hurt a little bit on special teams. Williams was a fantastic gunner on punts and kick returns. He flew down the field extremely fast to down the ball or get a tackle.
The special teams will survive though. They have plenty of other guys who can get down the field fast enough to make those same kinds of plays. It opens up the opportunity for the younger receivers to do that as well. It just gives those guys a lot more opportunities to play.
This shouldn’t really affect Ohio State too much. We wish Williams nothing but the best and we hope he can succeed wherever he decides to go.
