The Ohio State football team had the bullet position under Urban Meyer and haven’t used it since he left. Ryan Day says it might be revived.

The Ohio State football team is looking for ways to improve their defense heading into 2021. One of the ways they are looking to do that is possibly bringing the bullet position back for the defense, a position that hasn’t been used since Brendon White was a Buckeye.

For those who don’t know, the bullet position was used under Urban Meyer as a hybrid linebacker-safety position. Whoever played it possessed unique skills that included being able to stop the run up the middle but also dropping back into coverage in the passing game.

The last Buckeye player to play the bullet position was Brendon White back in 2018. He then moved to safety in 2019 once Ryan Day took over and then transferred to Rutgers following that season. The bullet position has been dormant since.

Day indicated today that it could come back when he spoke with reporters. That might be used instead of a slot corner in 2021. That would be interesting since the secondary was so bad a year ago. This could be a way to improve it.

It will be interesting to see who would get time at that position. The entire linebacker room is new, so it could be someone who is in that room. It could also be someone like Court Williams, who has a big enough body at 6’1 and 215 pounds to fill that role.

Next. Ohio State basketball should try to grab Walker Kessler. dark

We’ll see how the reps develop in Spring practice, including the Spring Game. We probably won’t know if the bullet position is truly still alive in the Buckeyes’ defense until Fall rolls around. I’m for anything to fix the secondary. That’s the biggest thing holding this team back from greatness.
