By Zane Harris
#2: Urban Meyer
The next former head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes on the list is Urban Meyer. Meyer began his coaching career as a defensive backs coach at St. Xavier High School. After that, he was a graduate assistant at Ohio State.
He would then be hired as the outside linebackers coach at Illinois State. The next season, he would be upgraded to the quarterbacks and wide receivers coach at Illinois State. The next season, he would be hired and stay for five years as the wide receivers coach at Colorado State. He then would spend four years as the wide receivers coach at Notre Dame.
Meyer would then get his big break into head coaching. He was hired as the head coach of Bowling Green. He would then be the head coach of Utah. He would then spend the next five seasons as the head coach of Florida before he was forced to retire due to his health. Meyer would come out of retirement after two years to fill the head coaching job at Ohio State.
While with the Buckeyes, Meyer had a record of 83-9 which is the second-best winning percentage in Ohio State head coaching history only behind Ryan Day.
Meyer had one national championship appearance in 2014, which they won. Along with this, Meyer coached the Buckeyes to a 4-3 record in bowl games (excluding playoff games from the record). Along with this, he won three Big Ten Championships while coaching the Buckeyes. He also had a 7-0 record against Michigan.
Some notable players that played under Urban Meyer were Joey Bosa, Nick Bosa, Michael Thomas, Ezekiel Elliott, Carlos Hyde, Marshon Lattimore, Bradley Roby, Taylor Decker, Andrew Norwell, Ryan Shazier, Johnathan Hankins, John Simon, and J.T. Barrett.
Meyer’s career with the Buckeyes would come to an end due to his health deteriorating and forcing him into retirement for the second time of his career. He was recently hired to coach the Jacksonville Jaguars.
