Ohio State Football: This offseason will be Day’s biggest test
The Ohio State football team is preparing for a huge offseason as head coach Ryan Day will be put to the test.
As the grind of this challenging season wears off, Ryan Day and the Ohio State football team is in store for a big offseason. Day will be put to the test in a major way for the first time as the Buckeye head coach.
The No. 1 thing on Day’s offseason agenda is to figure out the quarterback position. Justin Fields is off to the NFL and three freshman quarterbacks are in line to compete for the opening. True freshman Kyle McCord and redshirt freshmen C.J. Stroud and Jack Miller will be in an epic battle during spring camp. Day will have to key on the player who gives Ohio State the best chance at winning and then get that player ready for the 2021 season.
Day will also probably have some staff turnover to figure out. With Urban Meyer accepting the Jacksonville Jaguars head coaching position, it is assumed that at least one current Ohio State staff members will be poached. Day will need to identify and hire suitable replacements for them.
Ryan Day will also have to keep his eye on the development of this defense. Kerry Coombs was coordinating this defense with one hand tied behind his back this season due to the pandemic and recruiting lulls in the secondary in 2018 and 2019. Young players will have to step up to get this defense back to where it needs to be in order to compete for a championship.
Lastly, Day will have to do all this in the midst of a pandemic. It has not gone away and the Buckeyes will be facing different challenges this spring than in a normal year. Ohio State is used to it by now having gone through a season with it, but having to develop this young roster will be that more difficult.
