Ohio State Football: Three predictions for the Big Ten Championship
No. 2: Kerry Coombs has his best game as defensive coordinator
Kerry Coombs was brought in last season after Jeff Hafley too the Boston College head coaching job. Losing six defensive starters from a season ago, the transition of this defense has been tougher than originally thought.
The problem is that the Buckeyes just don’t have to horses in the secondary. Shaun Wade has been fine at corner and Sevyn Banks has been decent as the other corner. Aside from that, it’s been a train wreck. Marcus Hooker doesn’t seem ready for the safety spot and neither does Marcus Williamson as the nickel back.
Coombs is just trying to get through this season as best he can. But this is where he earns his money. I predict that Coombs has his best game as Ohio State defensive coordinator. Whether it be making personnel decisions or making something happen schematically, I think we will see the best version of the defense in this game.
Now Northwestern does not exactly have a dynamic offense but it has a quality quarterback in Patrick Ramsey and has a decent rushing attack with running backs Isaiah Bowser and Drake Anderson.
Look for a big game from the linebacker unit with Tuf Borland, Pete Werner, and Baron Browning all showing up and making a big time impact.
