Ohio State football: Ryan Day apologizing is dumb
By Ryan Stano
Ohio State coach Ryan Day thought that he needed to apologize after Jack Miller had a rushing touchdown late in Saturday’s game. He was wrong.
Football is a game of execution and preparation. If you prepare well enough, you should execute well enough to win the game. Ohio State executed extremely well on Saturday, beating Nebraska 52-17. According to Ryan Day though, they might have executed too well late in the game.
Day said he would reach out to Scott Frost to apologize for Jack Miller’s touchdown run late in the game. He said he didn’t have the personnel out there to take a knee. Apparently, he didn’t’ want to come off as disrespectful by letting his freshman quarterback run for a touchdown.
He couldn’t be more wrong in this scenario. Sure it was late in the game, but Nebraska’s job is to stop Ohio State from scoring. If you don’t want them to score, tackle them. It shouldn’t be up to Day to make his team give up and stop putting points on the board.
Besides the fact that Day wanted to get his backup quarterback some much-needed reps, Nebraska had several dirty hits in the game. They got flagged for targeting three separate times, with two of them standing. A head-hunting hit took Chris Olave out of the game as well.
Perhaps that’s why Day initially wanted to score the late points. Maybe he wanted to show that those hits were over the line. Regardless of the reason, they scored a touchdown. It’s lame to apologize for doing what you are supposed to in a game.
You can bet that Day won’t apologize for doing something similar against Michigan though. I think he just decided to apologize because of newfound love between the two programs after fighting together to bring back the Big Ten season.
No matter what his reasons are for apologizing, it’s something he didn’t have to do. Now he’s got to focus on preparing for Penn State next week.
