Ohio State alums Carmen’s Crew looks to repeat as champions
By Walter Sharp
On July 4, 2020, The Basketball Tournament will begin, and Carmen’s Crew, full of Ohio State alums, has a rough road to repeat as champions.
Their biggest threat is Overseas Elite, and it is to be said that they are the favorites because they had added two former NBA players. Joe Johnson and Pooh Jeter are joining the already stacked Overseas Elite squad.
The team has brought in over $7 million dollars in winnings from the tournament. D.J, Kennedy is a two time MVP and they are out for revenge after suffering a loss in the championship game last year.
The Ohio State Alums are the number one overall seed of the tournament and are looking to make another run at the championship. William Buford, David Lighty, and Aaron Craft are all looking to repeat, and make a statement to show that last year was not a fluke.
Craft is retiring from the team at the end of the tournament which gives the Crew even more motivation to send him out a champion again. Carmen’s Crew will have a first-round bye and will wait for the winner of War Tampa and House of ‘Paign.
If the House of ‘Paign were to beat War Tampa it will be a Big Ten showdown in the Second Round. The toughest test for Carmens Crew will be Golden Eagles which is a team that is made up of Marquette Alumni, and the Golden Eagles are the team that Carmens Crew defeated to win the tournament last year.
Carmen’s Crew and the Golden Eagles both would have to make it to the Semifinals to be able to square off in a title game rematch. The winner of that game will most likely face off again Overseas Elite in the championship game.

This looks a lot like last year’s tournament where the Crew beat Overseas Elite and Golden Eagles to crown themselves champions. Even though Carmen’s Crew is the number one overall seed Overseas Elite is favored to win the tournament with there two additions.
Overseas Elite has formed a Big 3 with D.J. Kennedy, Joe Johnson, and Pooh Jeter. Carmens Crew has their own Big 3 with William Buford, Aaron Craft, and David Lighty. The Buckeye Alums will be looking to Craft to set the tone on the defensive end. Craft averaged 3.2 steals per game in last year’s tournament, and he also added 4.3 rebounds per game.
Carmen’s Crew will also need a repeat of performances from William Buford and David Lighty as well if they plan on repeating as champions. William Buford averaged 17.8 points per game, 4.3 rebounds per game, and shot 60% from behind the three point line. His partner David Lighty averaged 15.3 points per game, 3.8 assists per game, and added 4.2 rebounds per game.
Everyone in the United States is champing at the bit to watch sports. The Basketball Tournament will attract a lot of viewers because it is the first live sporting event in months. This will put all the teams in the tournament at center stage and could help a lot of the athletes playing in the tournament to get a call from NBA teams for a tryout.
All the players playing on the teams in the tournament are not shy of playing in the spotlight with many of them playing professionally overseas. We will soon find out if Carmens Crew is ready for the big stage and if they can walk into Columbus and bring home another championship in the arena they all came together.
