Ohio State Football: Two assistants could be head coaches in 2021
Kerry Coombs, Defensive Coordinator
Could Ryan Day and the Ohio State football team lose its defensive coordinator in consecutive one and done years on the job? It could be very possible.
Coombs shot up the coaching ranks as an assistant with Urban Meyer after being hired away from the University of Cincinnati. The coach quickly became known for his energy and his excellent recruiting abilities.

Season after season, Coombs helped develop elite talent for Ohio State in the secondary, sending multiple first round picks into the NFL such as Marshon Lattimore, Denzel Ward, Gareon Conley and Eli Apple.
He spent the last two seasons with Mike Vrable and the Tennessee Titans. Coming back to Columbus to take over as D.C., Coombs could be inline for an even bigger job after next season.
The Cincinnati native wears the Queen City on his sleeve. And with Luke Fickell, the current Cincinnati head coach, on the fast track for a Power Five conference job as early as next season, Coombs could very well be the first man the Bearcats call about the job.
And if he is offered that job, there is no way he turns it down. Being the head man in his home town would be a dream come true for Coombs, but it would lead to another defensive coordinator opening for Ryan Day and Ohio State.
