The Ohio State football team was already destined for greatness during the 2020 season, but the addition of a new RB should make them the title favorite.

Ryan Day seems to have this whole transfer portal recruiting down pat. The second-year head coach landed coveted QB Justin Fields and OL Jonah Jackson in the portal’s debut last season and now has just pulled former Oklahoma RB Trey Sermon to Columbus.

The backfield seemed to be an area of concern for Ohio State heading into 2020, but following Sermon’s commitment there is far more clarity.

Ohio State was already listed among the National Title favorites entering the year, but with the RB position now adding depth the Buckeyes should become the favorite. Justin Fields already had an arsenal of weapons at his disposal and Sermon could be the piece that makes the Ohio State offense indefensible.

Fields can beat the defense in multiple ways whether through the air or on the ground. However, his health is of utmost importance for the Buckeyes to have success deep into the postseason.

Having him fully healthy proved to be lethal last season. Teams could not even keep pace with Ohio State and the story will continue in 2020.

The talent gap keeps increasing, and despite a tough schedule Ohio State looks to be on track to earn their way back to college football’s biggest stage in the College Football Playoff.

As I study the teams and returning talent across the country while evaluating each team’s respective schedule difficulty, the more clarity I find in projecting an Ohio State versus Clemson rematch. Only this time the game will be held in the National Championship.

I like the Buckeyes over the Tigers this year with the revenge factor in mind, but logically due to the plethora of weapons such as Chris Olave, Garrett Wilson, Trey Sermon and the incoming freshman receivers poised to have an immediate impact. The dual-threat abilities of Justin Fields speak for itself, but now with a tandem of RBs he will guide the offense into scoring over 40 points per game as well as lead the Heisman conversation.

The return of Kerry Coombs will also be huge for Ohio State as recruiting has seen a jump, but the elite level of play in the secondary will be maintained. I expect the Silver Bullets to lockdown opposing offenses yet again and force a healthy amount of turnovers.

Next. Kerry Coombs sure hit the ground running. dark

It’s hard not to get excited about the 2020 season, especially with no active sports to distract us. Summer camp will be here before we know it and year two of the promising looking Ryan Day era will be underway in hopes of the storybook ending the Buckeyes are owed from last year.
