Ohio State Football: Buckeye coaches planting flags this week
The Ohio State football coaches are busy recruiting this week. Here is an update on all that is happening.
Buckeye coaches are busy recruiting this week as they try to secure some commitments for the 2021 class before the dead period starts on February 3rd. Ryan Day has been all over the place, including making a stop up in northeastern Ohio to check on Streetsboro four-star defensive lineman Mike Hall.
Hall is high in the Buckeye priority list as this 2021 cycle rolls along. Trying to keep top in-state talent has been a key theme to Ryan Day’s recruiting philosophy and Hall would be a big time get for Larry Johnson and the defensive tackle depth chart.
New defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs has been attacking the recruiting trail hard since he came aboard. Most notably meeting with 2020 four-star athlete Cam Martinez to hopefully secure his spot in the Ohio State third ranked 2020 recruiting class.
Coombs was also in St. Louis on Monday recruiting a talented four-star corner in Jakailin Johnson, according to Lettermen Row. The 247Sports No. 51 ranked prospect in the entire 2021 class is high in the Buckeye must get list to try to revamp the secondary room.
Ohio State is really valuing Johnson’s recruitment and must think they have a good shot at landing him because before Coombs arrived on Monday, coaches Brian Hartline and Matt Barnes were in St. Louis to visit last Friday.
Coombs also noted via his twitter account that he was in Virginia Beach on Tuesday morning which would lead one to assume that he was there to meet with Tony Grimes, the five-star No. 10 ranked player in the 2021 class. He is the No. 1 ranked cornerback and has the Buckeyes high on his list of schools. If Coombs can sway Grimes toward the Scarlet and Gray then a No.1 overall recruiting class in 2021 is well within Ryan Day’s reach.
Finally, running backs coach Tony Alford has been a busy man trying to lock up some top-notch running back recruits for 2021. It was noted, according to Lettermen Row, that Alford was in West Bloomfield, Michigan last week to visit Donovan Edwards, the No. 2 ranked back in the class.
Alford also has trips lined up this week to see North Carolina top running back prospects Will Shipley and Evan Pryor, two highly sought after running backs who either one would be major gets for Ohio State.
Also confirmed is that coach Alford offered a scholarship to Brandon Campbell, four-star back from Rosenberg, Texas this past weekend, according to Eleven Warriors.
Landing anyone of those running backs would be huge for Tony Alford and Ohio State as the need at that position is crucial for the 2021 recruiting cycle.
