The Ohio State football team has one of the most electrifying offenses in the entire country, but still hasn’t had to unleash its secret weapon.

Following a bye week, the Ohio State football team returns to the gridiron this week against Northwestern. In a rare Friday night contest, the Buckeyes travel to Evanston with the goal of maintaining their high level of play as well as staying healthy.

The Ohio State offense has been virtually unstoppable as JK Dobbins is second in the nation in rushing yards with 826 yards and six touchdowns. Master Teague has been a phenomenal compliment thus far emerging as the next potential great back in Columbus.

One of the aspects of the offense that makes it so difficult to defend is the ability to spread the ball around with talent everywhere. KJ Hill, Binjimen Victor and Chris Olave lead the way on the outside with true freshman Garrett Wilson making an immediate impact as well.

However, the real focal point of the Ohio State offense is Heisman Contender Justin Fields who has been electric throughout his first six games. Fields has shown incredible command of the offense and poise from the pocket as he has dissected opposing defenses.

The transfer QB can also run…like Braxton Miller 2.0. He has shown the wherewithal to recognize the pocket collapsing or a broken play or just tight coverage downfield where he has extended or made a play with his legs. Fields’ first touchdown as a Buckeye came on his legs and he’s rushed for at least one in every game since.

The scary part for opponents though, is Ryan Day honestly has not called very many designed QB runs. The goal is to keep Fields healthy due to lack of depth in the QB room and a way to do so is  limiting him in designed running situations unless he’s needed.

The Buckeyes have had one of the most dynamic offenses in the country up through this point in the season, but there’s still a while section of the playbook that hasn’t been consistently used yet. Think about that.

Sure, we’ve seen Day sprinkle in a few designed runs here and there but nothing repetitive like the JT Barrett days.

I expect this Friday in Evanston to be more of the same from the previous six games, but next Saturday at high noon in The Shoe, look for the entire playbook to be at Day’s disposal. October 26th will be the official coming out party for the fully loaded, high-octane Ohio State offense as its back pocket secret weapon is regularly unveiled.

The potential for the ceiling of the Buckeyes’ offense is through the roof when you factor in the legs of Justin Fields. It makes the scheme nearly indefensible. I like Fields to have a day in what will be the first of the Big Ten’s Game of the Year showdown.
