Many have said the Ohio State Buckeyes may be the best team in college football or at least the most complete team. What do the numbers say?

At the end of September Bill Bender of SportingNews.com wrote an article where he made the case there isn’t a more complete team in college football than Ohio State. After the 34-10 win over Michigan State Saturday it’s hard to disagree with Mr. Blender.

Especially when you crunch the numbers.

I will look at the Top 10 teams in the AP Poll and see how they stack up in the “Complete Team” category. I’ll use four stats I think are a good gauge now that we are entering Week 7 of the season, total offensive and defensive rankings, points scored and those allowed.

Here is the countdown from the 10th most complete team rating and where the AP voters have them ranked. Like in golf, the lower the score the better on this list.

Florida No. 7 in the AP Poll:  Total offense (54), scoring offense (53), total defense (11) and scoring defense (5). Total score 123

Notre Dame No. 9 in the AP Poll:  Total offense (42), scoring offense (13), total defense (39) and scoring defense (13). Total score 107

Oklahoma No. 6 in the AP Poll:  Total offense (1), scoring offense 2, total defense (46) and scoring defense (25). Total score 74

Alabama No. 1 in the AP Poll:    Total offense (3), scoring offense (3), total defense (35) and scoring defense (13). Total score 54

Clemson No. 2 in the AP Poll:  Total offense (16), scoring offense (20), total defense (5) and scoring defense (9). Total score 51

LSU No. 5 in the AP Poll:  Total offense (2), scoring offense (1), total defense (17) and scoring defense (30). Total score 50

Wisconsin No. 8 in the AP Poll:  Total offense (32), scoring offense (9), Total defense (1) and scoring defense (1). Total score 43

More from Ohio State Football

Georgia tied for No. 3 in the AP Poll:  Total offense (10), scoring offense (10), total defense (13) and scoring defense (7). Total score 30

Penn State Ni. 10 in the AP Poll:  Total offense (11), scoring offense (5), total defense (4) and scoring defense (2). Total score 22

Ohio State tied for No. 3 in the AP Poll:  Total offense (7), scoring offense (4), total defense (3) and scoring defense (4). Total score 18

However you rank the Top 10 best teams,  it’s obvious the Buckeyes are the most complete team.

If some think it’s because they put up these stats without playing anybody they should consider these things.

Next. Big Ten Week 7 predictions. dark

Ohio State defeated previously ranked Michigan State by 24 points last Saturday and No. 25 Cincinnati 42-0 the second game of the season. Also, the combined records of the six opponents is 20-6 when you take away the losses to the Buckeyes. And they are all FBS schools.
