Ohio State Football: What to say if you’re Ryan Day
By Jay Wilhelm
With the Ohio State Buckeyes showing complete domination in all three phases of the game, how does the coaching staff keep the player’s heads straight?
In week one Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields looked the part we all expected. The defense did some good things, but there were definitely things to work on.
In week two Cincinnati came to town with a nice storyline of Luke Fickell and his top ten defense. A 42-0 drubbing showed those few defensive things were fixed and Fields continued to shine.
Dobbins came with the juice rushing for 141 yards.
Now week three finishes up and more of the same. A trick play was all the Buckeye defense gave up. Fields is in Heisman talk mode, JK Dobbins puts up another 193 on the ground, then let’s add the mix how Olave and the receiving corps made its presence known.
Oh, one more thing from the 51-10 road blowout and Big Ten opener at Indiana. The special teams unit showed up as Chris Olave blocked a Hoosier punt that went through the end zone for a safety.
Offense, defense and special teams are now all clicking beautifully as they head into a week four matchup with a far weaker opponent in Miami of Ohio in Columbus. If you’re Ryan Day and the Buckeye coaching staff what do you work on, what do you say to keep this team focused?
It didn’t seem like much was wrong with the last few performances in any facet of the game.
In the interest of being elite and competing for a national title, let’s see what we can find. I think we are going to have to knit-pick at this point in the season with what we’ve put together thus far.
Blake Haubeil missed a 32 yard field goal at the beginning of the game against Indiana. Clean that up. Quarterback Justin Fields struggled with his accuracy early in the game and that is something to work on as it looks more about his mechanics than anything else. That’s a small tweak and we are good.
The offensive and defensive lines absolutely dominated in the trenches, so we are good there. Hey backups! Score a point or two. That’s knit-picking at its finest there.

I guess the only thing you can do at this point is make sure Chase Young and the rest of the team captains stay on their teammates. Never stop, never be satisfied.
If I’m Ryan Day and company, I work on their mental readiness and never let them forget when you give one day a break, a Purdue game can happen. That can be the day that keeps you from competing for the crown.
It is obvious the talent is there and the coaching is there to go after another championship. The Buckeyes have had domination all around.
What does Ryan Day say at this point? Never forget that feeling, and NO DAYS OFF!
