In the latest AP Poll Ohio State remained at No. 6, Michigan dropped a spot and Michigan State fell out of the Top 25. Five SEC teams are highly ranked.

After a 51-10 victory over the Indiana Hoosiers the Ohio State Buckeyes stayed at No. 6 in the Week 4 AP Poll. By losing to Arizona State, Michigan State fell out of the Top 25 and Michigan dropped one spot to No. 11 after a bye week.

The SEC is well represented with six ranked teams and I think all are deserving. However, are five of them among the best nine teams in the country, and three of the top four?

In over 50 years of watching college football, I can’t remember a time a conference had five teams I would rank in the Top 10 let alone three of the four best. I can think of at least one SEC team I’m not sold on that’s ranked No. 9.

The Florida Gators pulled out an ugly 24-20 win over the Miami Hurricanes to start the season. The second game was a victory over the UT Martin Skyhawks 45-0 and the Gators squeaked out a win last Saturday against the Kentucky Wildcats 29-21.

Is that a start worthy of a Top 10 ranking?

I’m still trying to get a feel whether the Auburn Tigers are for real or not and the 8th best team in the country. The win over Oregon in Week 1 was impressive, I’m just not sure what to make about the wins over Tulane and Kent State though.

I’ll take a wait and see attitude with Auburn.

Alabama, Georgia and LSU are all playing well but should all be ranked ahead of Oklahoma and Ohio State? Texas A&M is the 6th ranked SEC team at No. 17 and probably deserving of that spot.

There are only five Big Ten teams ranked this week. In addition to Ohio State and Michigan at No. 11, Penn State and Wisconsin are tied at 13 and Iowa is ranked No. 18. There is a big game on tap on Saturday that could shake up the rankings and things in the conference as the Wolverines travel to Madison to play the Badgers.
