Ohio State Football: Nitpicking Justin Fields’ first game
Justin Fields had a terrific 1st game as the starting QB but there are questions concerning his play as the Ohio State football team prepares for Game 2.
Last Saturday Ohio State football fans finally got a taste of what Justin Fields looks like in a Scarlet jersey, and he looked dang good. Fields had put up four touchdowns in the blink of an eye, putting to bed most of the concerns regarding his ability and his readiness to lead the Buckeye offense.
He was superb against Florida Atlantic, but allow me to play devil’s advocate and give a different perspective regarding Field’ big day.
Nitpicking is a thankless job, but somebody has to do it. On a day where Justin Fields accounted for 5 touchdowns, it sounds counterintuitive to try to pick apart that performance.

On the flip side, it’s very easy to overreact to anything that happens in the first week of the season. Fans will see the efficiency with which Fields scored 5 touchdowns on paper, but what fans need to remember before preemptively naming Justin Fields a Heisman front-runner is that he didn’t have to make very many difficult throws.
Fields was met with very little pressure by the Owls, and each of his touchdown passes were to uncontested receivers. His long touchdown run was met with virtually no defense whatsoever.
That’s not Fields’ fault, and it’s not meant to take away from his tremendous performance. However, it is something to consider before reaching a verdict on what Fields is going to be like as the Ohio State QB going forward.
He’ll have a chance to really prove himself when Cincinnati comes to town. The Bearcats should offer enough of a challenge to find out what the first year starter is made of.
If Fields can replicate the success he had in week one against the Bearcats, then maybe we can start to freak out about how good our QB is good. Again, don’t let my devil’s advocate response dampen the emotions of Buckeye Nation.
Fields looked good, really good. I’m simply suggesting that fans wait just a little bit before we lose our marbles over our shiny new quarterback.
