Chase Young will be a top-5 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. His performance against Florida Atlantic bolstered his case to join other great Ohio State defensive ends.

On Saturday against the Owls, Young was a key piece in an Ohio State defense that helped Ryan Day start his head coaching career on a high note with a 45-21 victory in The Shoe.

“The Predator” lived up to his name during the noon game, constantly getting into the backfield and disrupting FAU’s offense, particularly putting an end to any attempt to run the ball.

In terms of stats, Young racked up 5 total tackles (3 solo), 1.5 sacks, and the same number of TFLs. He added a pass deflection on the line for good measure, affecting the Owls offense in a multitude of ways and leading a (mostly) strong Ohio State defense.

Young proved once again that it is nearly impossible to succeed in the long-term against him in pass and run protection.

When the offensive Linemen double-team him, other guys like Jashon Cornell (4 total tackles, 3 solo, 1 sack and 2 TFLs) and Robert Landers (3 total tackles, 1 solo, 0.5 sack, and 0.5 TFLs) rushed through the holes to light up the ball carrier living up to the Rushmen nickname.

And when the O-Line makes the mistake of leaving Young alone with one lineman, it’s often over for the lone lineman and the ball carrier shortly thereafter.

Double coverage also allows for linebackers to find holes to the backfield and tougher pressure causes quick throws. That gives the secondary a better chance to stay with the receivers.

For the defense as a collective unit, even a decent game by Young does make you wonder about the rest of the Silver Bullets, who have an easier task in performing their assignments when he dominates.

Next. Jeremy Ruckert could be special. dark

More games like this from The Predator will continue to solidify his draft stock, which already reaches No. 1 for Matt Miller. And it will also lead to many more wins for the Scarlet and Gray.
