Ohio State Football: Fields shines in debut, shows room for growth
The Ohio State football team opened its season in impressive fashion as Justin Fields put up five TDs in his debut to lead the Buckeyes to a 45-21 victory.
Watching the first eight minutes of Justin Fields debut in the Scarlet and Gray looked like the Ohio State football team was going to hang a hundred against Florida Atlantic. The Buckeyes raced out of the gate at blazing speed scoring 28 points immediately.
A double option on the opening drive allowed Fields to break free for his “Welcome to Columbus” moment after a great read for a 51 yard touchdown run. Minutes later, after the defense forced a three and out Fields found TE Jeremy Ruckert for a 25 yard score to notch the pair’s first passing and receiving touchdowns of the year.
Every two minutes the Buckeyes put points on the board in the first quarter and continued the trend as Binjimen Victor caught a 32 yard strike which put Ohio State up by three scores.
The following drive, Fields got to showcase his arm yet again as he threw a 25 yard dart over the middle to Chris Olave at the 6:50 mark for his fourth touchdown of the afternoon.

Despite the incredibly fast start, the Buckeyes’ offense quieted down until the end of the third quarter. In between scores, FAU forced a pair of turnovers and were able to get pressure on Fields before anything could develop downfield.
Overall, Justin Fields had a phenomenal day as he accounted for five touchdowns — a school record for a debut. The only hiccups were game management which is to be expected of a first time starting quarterback.
The Buckeyes are in great hands with Fields under center. As he continues to grow in this offense, the sky will be the limit for the highly talented dual threat QB.
Until then, expect occasional growing pains all around but remain focused to the potential that will soon be reached by this year’s Ohio State Buckeyes.
