On a site I follow closely when it comes to Ohio State recruiting, a guy in the know has speculated players in the 2020 class could get a bump.

Those at 247Sports do an outstanding job of covering Ohio State sports. The dean of recruiting is Bill Kurelic, and in a recent article he listed his top 10 players in the 2020 class he thought could get a bump in the rankings after their senior seasons.

Here are those players with their position rankings according to 247Sports Composite. It’s an interesting list and Mr. Kurelic provided good info as always, and I suggest you check out his article.

  • No. 10:  Safety Lathan Ransom (4)
  • No. 9:  Wide receiver Gee Scott Jr. (11)
  • No. 8:  Outside linebacker Mitchell Melton (43)
  • No. 7:  Offensive guard Jakob James (50)
  • No. 6:  Defensive tackle Darrion Henry (17
  • No. 5:  Athlete Cameron Martinez (14)
  • No. 4:  Center Luke Wypler (1)
  • No. 3:  Quarterback Jack Miller (6)
  • No. 2:  Tight end Joe Royer (13)
  • No. 1:  Safety Lejond Cavazos (23)

I’m not in the know like Mr. Kurelic, just an old guy who has followed recruiting far too long. But of course I have to share my takes of the players on his list.

First I want to look at players who may have dropped in the rankings due to an injury situation. Not being able to participate at camps can lower a player’s ranking, and usually does.

If my memory serves me right Jack Miller was considered a top 2 quarterback in the country by some before he was injured. With a big senior season I could see him moving back into the top 5.

Darrion Henry has an opportunity to climb the ladder with a big season. Cincinnati area teams play outstanding football and he will be going up against future FBS players often. Scouts and recruiting experts will definitely be watching him play.

It was reported in the article Luke Wypler was once ranked as a top 50 overall player so I could see him making a move up in the rankings if he is completely healthy.

Now a look at two more in-state recruits.

More from Ohio State Football

Since I believe Ohio high school players are often undervalued I wonder if an offensive lineman like Jakob James could move higher in the rankings unless he pancakes everybody. But with a good season catching the football I could see tight end Joe Royer cracking the top 10.

As for Lathan Ransom, Gee Scott Jr., and Cameron Marinez, with everything I have read about those three I’m surprised they aren’t ranked higher already. It was reported in the article Lejond Cavazos will move to corner for IMG Academy. A good season at that position would almost certainly improve his ranking as the No. 245 overall player.

I’ll defer to Mr. Kurelic on Mitchell Melton because I’m not as familiar with him. But I tend to agree his status may improve. With coach Day going after an out-of-state player ranked as low as Melton he must see something special in the guy.

There you have it, a list of Ohio State recruits who may move up in the rankings provided by an expert, and takes from a guy who is simply ate up with this stuff.
