If anybody thought Ohio State would slip in recruiting with Urban Meyer stepping down from the head coaching position they were wrong.

Today Ryan Day added another Top 100 player to his 2020 Ohio State recruiting class when four-star recruit Lathen Ransom committed to play for the Buckeyes. Ransom is an outstanding safety who gives coaches Day and defensive backs coach Jeff Hafley yet another outstanding player in the class at the back end of the defense.

Ransom is ranked the 4th best player at his position and is the No. 76 player overall in the 2020 class. By everything I read, he was a strong Ohio State lean but it’s nice to have him in the fold so soon.

With Ransom’s commitment, coach Day now has 9 of the top 100 recruits in the country in his 2020 class according to the 247Sports Composite. Ohio State also jumped to the No. 2 spot behind Clemson in the recruiting rankings.

Before looking at other recruits, check out how talented Ransom is.

Ransom joins four-star safety Lejond Cavasos and four-star corner Clark Phillips III in the defensive backfield. Underrated three-star athlete Cameron Martinez may also play DB.

Coach Day loaded his class with talented offensive players early on which was to be expected. With the way the Ohio State offense has performed during the two years he directed it what player on that side of the ball wouldn’t want to play for the Buckeyes.

However, defensive recruits were taking a wait and see attitude with the new coaches on board. Apparently they are liking what they see in coaches Hafley, linebackers coach Al Washington and co-defensive coordinator Greg Mattison.

Here are other defensive players who have come on board.

  • Darrion Henry:  No. 11 Defensive tackle
  • Cody Simon:  No. 10 Outside linebacker
  • Mitchell Melton:  No. 43 Outside linebacker
  • Ty Hamilton:  No. 40 Strongside defensive end

Trust me, Melton and Hamilton are underrated or coach Day wouldn’t have offered them this soon. They were players he wanted.

The way Ryan Day hit the ground running on the recruiting trail has to be a concern for opposing coaches. It shouldn’t have come as a surprise though, he learned from one of the best.
