Ohio State Football: July booms music to Ryan Day’s ears
If opposing coaches were feeling comfortable going up against Ohio State on the recruiting trail with Urban Meyer retiring they aren’t now. The July booms Ryan Day has heard lately has to be music to his ears, but not to the coaches competing against him.
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day’s 2020 Ohio State recruiting class was already off to a great start and with defensive lineman Darrion Henry committing on June 29 things were really looking up. Then the calendar turned to July and the fireworks really began and the booms haven’t stopped yet.
Coach Day landed yet another receiver ranked among the top 100 players when Mookie Cooper committed to join the 2020 class today That makes five commits in July already.
Cooper is ranked the 11th best receiver in the 247Sports Composite and the No. 64 overall player in the country.
Just take a look at the July fireworks coach Day has enjoyed, and they began before the 4th. Tight end Joe Royer committed on July 2nd filling a position of need.
Royer is ranked as a three star but is an athletic TE. The fact he is 6 ft. 5 but only weighs 225 pounds may play a part in his ranking. But if coach Day sees something in this in-state recruit from Cincinnati that’s okay with me.
The next day linebacker Mitch Melton joined the class. I can’t believe this 6 ft. 3, 235 pound junior is ranked as a three star recruit with the way he stops the run and defends the pass.

The booms got even louder on the 4th of July with two commitments.
The No. 21 corner in the 2020 class Cameron Martinez came on board as did the No. 22 guard Josh Fryar. Both were outstanding gets for coach Day.
Martinez joins Clark Phillips III giving the Buckeyes two corners in the 2020 class, an area of need as there wasn’t one in the 2019 class. Fryar joins a loaded offensive line group, but he and center Luke Wypler are the only two who are listed as interior linemen.
Others may be moved inside but it’s nice to have a player who is used to going up against defensive tackles in the middle. Now for the latest boom, Mookie Cooper.
He is an undersized receiver at 5 ft. 8 1/2 and 193 pounds. Some have speculated he may play the slot receiver / H-back roll. The only thing I know is everybody raves about his talent, and those who rate recruits see it as well.
Well, it’s been quite a July already for Ohio State coach Ryan Day. With 23 days left in the month there could be more fireworks and loud booms coming before August. It wouldn’t surprise me if it happens the way things have been going lately.
