Ohio State Football: Great matchups for QB Justin Fields in 2019
Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields will be going up against talented players at the position during his first year in the Big Ten.
I love lists and one by Bryan Fischer of Athlon Sports pointing out the best quarterback matchups in the Big Ten next season is especially interesting. It has Ohio State QB Justin Fields listed it 4 times in the top 10 matchups.
It is an excellent article and I suggest you check it out. I want to point out matchups involving Fields Mr. Fischer highlighted. I will also use info he provided as well as my takes.
I’ll list the matchups in game order and will put the ranking in as well.
Adrian Martinez vs. Justin Fields September 28 (2): This matchup should make Buckeye fans nervous, and for multiple reasons.
First, playing in Lincoln is always a challenge. Second, Nebraska got on a roll late last season winning four of the last six games. Third, Adrian Martinez is a special talent.
The Nebraska QB reminds me of a young Trace McSorely. He can beat you with his arm or legs and has great instincts.
Last season Martinez passed for 2,617 yards, ran for 629 more and totaled 25 touchdowns as a freshman, in only 11 games. I see him being a Heisman contender in the near future.
Justin Fields vs. Brian Lewerke Oct. 5 (9): Lewerke had a down year in 2018 only throwing for 2,040 yards and 8 touchdowns. But I was reminded in the Athlon Sports article he was pulled from last year’s game against Ohio State.
It’s never a good thing to go up against a QB with a chip on his shoulder, especially on a Mark Dantonio coached team.
Hunter Johnson vs. Justin Fields October 18 (10): Fields will be going up against another former five-star recruit in this game, and Johnson has been on campus for a year after transferring from Clemson. The way Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald sends undervalued recruits to the NFL, with him having the No. 2 pro-style QB in the 2017 recruiting class is a scary thought.
And of course the Wildcats will be in a bad mood after losing to the Buckeyes in last year’s Big Ten Championship Game.

Now for “The Game”.
Shea Patterson vs. Justin Fields November 30 (1): Fields will once again go up against a former five-star quarterback. Patterson was the top ranked player at the position in the 2016 class and the No. 4 overall player.
Last season the Michigan quarterback threw for 2,600 yards and 22 touchdowns. It has been reported Jim Harbaugh is planning to open up his offense so we may have another shootout in The Game.
There are more intriguing matchups involving Big Ten quarterbacks in Bryan Fischer’s article and plenty of good info.
I just wanted to focus on key matchups involving Justin Fields as he goes through a Big Ten schedule for the first time. Once the games begin, we will probably find out there will be more good battles as other quarterbacks step up.
