Ohio State got off to a hot start in summer recruiting by gaining valuable four-star commitments at the wide receiver and cornerback positions, addressing needs in both the 2020 and ’21 classes.

Four-star Wide Receiver Jayden Ballard from Massillon joined the 2021 Ohio State recruiting class today. Ballard’s skill-set includes a quick-thinking ability to adjust to how the football moves in the air.

His 4.60 in the 40-yard dash leaves a little to be desired, but two more years in high school and that time could move up two-tenths of a second by the start of the 2021 season.

247 Sports scouting report written by Allen Trieu last fall mentioned his ability to adjust and to “get off the ground quickly” and to “get down the field…top off the defense.” Ballard will benefit from two more years of high school play and the practice that follows at Ohio State before the ’21 season.

Second to join the Buckeyes recruiting ranks is four-star cornerback Clark Phillips III out of La Habra, California. His addition to the 2020 class addresses a major need for the Buckeyes on the defensive side of the ball.

Based on his 247 Sports scouting report by Greg Biggins, Phillips III makes up for his 5’10.5″ frame by playing with an impressive physicality and a “bulldog mentality.” His talent and vertical will help Clark contribute an immense impact on the Buckeyes defense in the years to come.

Both additions contribute greatly to both classes. The 2020 class, which was in need of any defensive player, will have a new member in Phillips who will add versatility and physicality to an already impressive class. Ballard will be another in a long and impressive line of phenomenal wide receivers to play for Ohio State.

Two four-star commitments to kick off the summer is a good sign in the continuing run of successful recruiting for Ohio State. Ryan Day’s 2020 and ’21 classes are currently ranked the 5th and 3rd-best nationally.
