Ohio State Football: Versatile D-Line commit following big brother
Finally, another defensive player in the 2020 Ohio State recruiting class with defensive lineman Ty Hamilton committing to play for the Buckeyes.
The 2020 Ohio State recruiting class is loaded with talented players on the offensive side of the ball but before yesterday only one defensive player had committed. Now there are two with Ty Hamilton joining the class.
Ty is a 6 ft. 3, 250 pound strong side defensive end from Pickerington who is following in his brother Davon’s footsteps.
He is ranked as a three-star recruit but don’t get hung up on that status. His older brother was ranked the No. 63 defensive tackle in the 2015 recruiting class and has developed into a fine player, and will be a factor in the middle of the line as a fifth year senior.
Apparently the younger Hamilton is looked upon as a player who can play on the edge or as a three technique tackle. Here is what Hamilton said about the situation per 247Sports.
"“All the schools want me to do the same type thing,” Hamilton previously told Bucknuts. “They want me to do a little bit of everything, playing 3-tech, strong-side defensive end. It’s all pretty much the same.”"
Coach Larry Johnson knows how to use those versatile players with Jason Cornell being the latest example. He was a high school defensive end who was moved to the three technique tackle position.
Last season he was moved back to the edge as a strong side defensive end for depth purposes and has now been moved back inside. Having a player like Hamilton who could be that type of player is a great get in the 2020 class with the number of linemen who will be leaving next year.
Cornell, nose tackle Robert Landers, older brother Davon and defensive end Jonathon Cooper will be graduating next year. End Chase Young will almost certainly be leaving as he is already projected to be a high draft pick.
