It was obvious former Ohio State wide receiver Michael Thomas was in line for a huge second NFL contract but the numbers I heard are mind-boggling.

Listening to commenters share their thoughts of what former Ohio State wide receiver Michael Thomas’ second NFL contract might be got my attention. They were speculating it could be over $100,000,000.

That’s a number thrown around concerning quarterback contracts but not wide receivers.

If he does sign for something close to that, Thomas will be a guy all young players should look up to as he has proven with hard work and perseverance you can climb mountains. Take a look at his situation when he enrolled at Ohio State and the one now.

Thomas was the third lowest ranked player in the 2012 class. He did see the field as a true freshman catching three passes for 22 yards but then something went wrong and he was red-shirted the following year.

Thomas certainly got things back on track as he had 54 receptions for 799 yards and 9 touchdowns during the 2014 National Championship season. In 2015 he caught 56 passes for 781 yards and 9 scores.

For some reason his performance the last two years he played for the Buckeyes wasn’t impressive enough for general managers to choose him in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. The New Orleans Saints were happy that was the case and took Thomas with the 47th pick.

More from Ohio State Football

All he did for the Saints in 2016 was catch 92 passes for 1,127 yards and 9 touchdowns. His performance earned him PFWA All-Rookie Team honors.

Then he picked his game up a notch or two.

Thomas had 104 receptions for 1,245 yards and 5 touchdowns in 2017. Last season he was the league leader with 125 receptions, gained 1,405 yards and scored 9 touchdowns.

Just think about how far Thomas has come since his college career began and the situation now.

It’s hard to say if Thomas will become a ‘100 Million Dollar Man’ after his rookie contract expires. But the financial guys I listen to are usually pretty close when evaluating potential contracts.

dark. Next. The best Ohio State DB unit ever

Whether they are correct on Thomas’ contract or not remains to be seen. But one thing is certain, the former Ohio State wide receiver will be paid well.
