Ohio State Football: The Zeke and Mike show could be a good one

Ezekiel Elliott was an outstanding draft pick in 2016 so I guess it just made sense for the Dallas Cowboys to bring in another Ohio State running back.

Dallas Cowboys owner / general manager Jerry Jones went against the grain when he chose Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott with the fourth pick in the 2016 NFL draft. Since that worked out so well he drafted Mike Weber in this year’s draft.

This time he grabbed a Buckeye running back on the cheap as Weber fell to the seventh round. He could well be one of the steals of the draft, and if he is the Zeke and Mike show could be a fun one to watch next season.

Elliot and Weber were teammates in 2015 but never played in the same game together. While Elliott was once again rushing for over 1,800 yards Weber was redshirted.

He must have learned a few things from watching the older Buckeye running back that year though. When Zeke was winning the NFL rushing title the following season Mike became the second Ohio State freshman running back to rush for 1,000 yards.

The following year was a rough one for both backs. Weber battled an injury and Elliott served a suspension. Since both had their seasons shortened neither gained 1,000 yards on the ground.

Things changed in 2018 as Elliott once again claimed the rushing title and Weber rushed for 964 yards while splitting time with J. K. Dobbins.

Here is why I think the two former teammates could form a great combo.

Elliott will obviously be the featured back as he is the best in the business. But even though he is a great three-down back who can play a ton of reps he will need rest from time to time.

Weber is capable of giving him a break, and on any down. In addition to his 2,676 yards and 24 touchdowns carrying the football for the Buckeyes he caught 54 passes for 297 yards and another score.

Next. Andrew Luck will like what he sees in Parris. dark

A seventh round pick isn’t guaranteed to make the team so Weber has plenty of work to do before he joins his former Ohio State teammate on the Cowboys roster, but I like his chances. If he makes the cut, the Zeke and Mike show should be fun to watch next fall.
