Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck has to be thrilled Ohio State wide receiver Parris Campbell slipped so far in the draft.

Don’t you think Andrew Luck was one of the happiest quarterbacks in the NFL when he found out Ohio State wide receiver slipped to the Indianapolis Colts at the 59th pick. The gunslinger may have the biggest weapon in this year’s draft class to throw to.

During his first three years as a Buckeye, Campbell didn’t put up big numbers as he was redshirted his freshman season and played wide receiver the next two. Once he was moved to his more natural position at H-back everything changed.

His first year playing in the slot he caught 40 passes for 584 yards and 3 touchdowns. Last season he caught 90 passes for 1063 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Campbell also proved he can catch a short pass and take it to the house.

I’m sure Luck and the Indianapolis coaching staff are already thinking about ways to get the ball in his hands.

Campbell reminds me of one of my all-time favorite receivers, especially with how he can run with the football after the catch.

I’m not saying he is going to be an all-time great like Paul Warfield. Just that his skill set is similar at this point.

Campbell was a running back in high school and Warfield was his first couple of years at Ohio State. Then Woody Hayes used Warfield at both halfback and wingback, essentially an H-back at that time, and he became more involved in the passing game.

Warfield developed into a fine receiver by the end of his college career but he also had running back skills to gain yards after the catch. That is a primary reason why the Hall of Fame receiver averaged 20 yards per catch during his NFL career. I could see Campbell being a similar type of player in the pros.

You never know how a player’s career will turn out, but I think Campbell has the potential to be a fine NFL player who could possibly become a star. I’m looking forward to hear what Andrew Luck has to say about Parris after seeing him up close when they get on the field together. I think he will like the view.
