Ohio State Football: Giants should have watched film, checked QB stats
The biggest blunder in this year’s NFL Draft was the New York Giants passing on Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins with the 6th pick.
It seems as though at least one general manager in every NFL Draft makes a huge mistake in the first round by passing on a player who is the obvious choice at a certain position. The honor for the worst decision in this year’s draft goes to Dave Gettleman of the New York Giants as he passed on Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins with the No. 6 pick and chose Duke’s Daniel Jones instead.
He has been strongly criticized for that choice, and rightfully so.
Nearly everybody who rates draft prospects had Haskins, Kyler Murray and Drew Lock as the top three quarterbacks, they just may have had them listed in a different order. Most had Jones as the fourth QB and some thought he would slip to the second round.
But Gettleman didn’t even have to pay attention to what the “Experts” had to say, all he had to do was watch game film and check out the stat sheets.
Before we check out the numbers the two quarterbacks put up let’s look at some of Haskins’ highlights. I’m guessing Mr. Gettleman never did.
Now for the stats.

After redshirting his first year at Ohio State, Haskins was J.T. Barrett’s backup in 2017 and completed 70.2 percent of his passes for 565 yards and 4 touchdowns with only 1 interception. When he became the starter he smashed Big Ten single season records.
Last season 2018 Haskins completed 70 percent of his passes for 4,831 yards and 50 touchdowns while only throwing 8 interceptions.
In 22 games, Haskins completed 70 percent of his passes for 5,396 yards, 54 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.
Jones does have more experience though as he has played in at least 11 games each of the last three years and 36 total. Check out his stats during that time.
- 2016: 62,8 percent, 2,836 yards, 16 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.
- 2017: 56.7 percent, 2,691 yards, 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions
- 2018: 60.5 percent, 2,674 yards, 22 touchdowns and 9 interceptions
- Career: 59.9 percent, 8,201 yards, 52 touchdowns and 29 interceptions
Often general managers try to out-think a situation and I am sure that’s what Dave Gettleman did when he passed on Dwayne Haskins and chose Daniel Jones. He should have simply watched game film and checked out the stats and then he may have made the correct choice.
If Mr. Gettleman had done that he may have had a player to plug into the starting spot soon and not have to worry about finding a franchise quarterback for years to come.
