Ohio State Football: Another DBU grad will play on Sundays
The number of Ohio State defensive backs who have been drafted in the last 10 years is off the chart. Now another DBU grad will play on Sundays.
It wouldn’t seem right if at least one Ohio State defensive back wasn’t chosen in the NFL Draft as it has only happened one time in the last decade. Kendall Sheffield was chosen in the fourth round by the Atlanta Falcons so there will be yet another DBU grad who will be playing on Sundays.
Ohio State is known as DBU for a reason. Just take a look at corners and safeties who have been drafted the last 10 years and you will see why.
- 2010 Safety Kurt Coleman seventh round
- 2011 Cornerback Chimdi Chekwa fourth round, Safety Jermale Hines fifth round
- 2012 Safety Nate Ebner sixth round
- 2014 Cornerback Bradley Roby first round, Safety Christian Bryant seventh round
- 2015 Cornerback Doran Grant fourth round
- 2016 Cornerback Eli Apple first round, Safety Vonn Bell second round
- 2017 Safety Malik Hooker first round, Cornerback Gareon Conley first round
- 2018 Cornerback Denzel Ward first round
- 2019 Cornerback Kendall Sheffield fourth round
Sheffield had a bit of a rocky road to join this elite group. He was the second ranked recruit in Nick Saban’s 2015 Alabama recruiting class, but after redshirting as a freshman he transferred to Blinn College where he played one season.

He then joined the 2017 Ohio State recruiting class as the top ranked JUCO corner. During his time in Columbus he registered 75 tackles, forced 2 fumbles and recovered a fumble.
While those stats don’t jump out at you, remember general managers often draft a player if they have potential and / or speed. Sheffield has plenty of both.
He was a five-star recruit out of high school who set the Ohio State 60 meter record last year with a time of 6.663. That was enough for Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff to take a chance on Sheffield with the fourth round pick, and who could blame him.
Congrats to the Buckeye corner. I’m glad he continued the streak of Ohio State defensive backs being chosen in the NFL draft. That makes six straight years and nine of the last ten at least one graduate from DBU has been drafted.
