Ohio State Football: Best choice in first round was an obvious one

You have to commend the San Francisco 49ers for not paying attention to the noise and choosing Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa with the No. 2 pick.

Prior to the draft some so-called experts thought other players might be a better choice than Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa as the 2nd pick. Ignoring the noise, the San Francisco 49ers chose to put importance in game film and stats so they chose the ‘Little Bear’.

Going with the obvious pick made it a great one since the 49ers got the best player in this year’s draft.

Four picks later the New York Giants made the worst blunder of the first round when they passed on Dwayne Haskins and chose Duke quarterback Daniel Jones. I wonder if the Giants didn’t get game film or stat sheets on Haskins, or simply ignored them.

I’ll get to that situation later, but first I want to look at what made choosing Bosa with the 2nd pick the obvious choice for San Francisco. As a former quarterback I would hate to have this guy coming after me.

In just 29 games Bosa recorded 77 tackles with 29 for a loss and 17.5 sacks. He also deflected 2 passes, forced 2 fumbles and scored a touchdown.

What’s even more impressive about those stats is 26 of those games he shared reps with talented, older defensive ends.

This year’s draft is loaded with excellent defensive linemen, and according to Andy Benoit of SI.com the 49ers needed to improve their pass rush so they were certain to choose one. Some of those linemen would have been very good choices as the 2nd pick, except for the fact Bosa is the most NFL ready edge rusher in the draft so he will almost certainly make an impact immediately.

Mr. Benoit also mentioned the 49ers run a 4-3 scheme. I wonder if they may be looking for added depth on the line.

If so, there is a versatile defensive tackle still on the board who may be able to play on the edge if needed, and San Francisco has the 4th pick in the 2nd round. Could Dre’Mont Jones and Bosa be reunited?

The 49er front office may take into consideration how the two gave quarterbacks grief while playing on the line together at Ohio State. If general manager John Lynch watches film and checks out the stats, he may decide to pair Bosa and Jones up again. Just a thought.
