With the Ohio State football team taking the field for the Spring Game in two months, what can we expect from the Buckeyes between now and then?
In two months, the Ohio State football team will once again take the field at ‘The Shoe’ for the annual Spring Game. They will play in a glorified scrimmage in front of what should be 80,000 fans or more (continued renovations will likely limit normal capacity).
The fans will get a glimpse at incoming freshman, but more anticipated is the arrival of Justin Fields.
However, there is still much to be done between now and then. Before Fields tosses the ball around the field and Chase Young humbles his own teammates on the offensive line, the Buckeyes have some work and polishing to do before April 13th.
Winter workouts are well underway as the Buckeyes now shift to a mix of weight lifting and training. Mickey Marotti will continue to incorporate football drills and exercises into the traditional workouts, and full practices will soon follow suit.
As fans, most of what will happen between now and the Spring Game will happen behind the scenes. However, the Buckeyes’ social media pages have already released several photos and videos from these workouts, allowing the fans to see a piece of what is currently going on at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
While Marotti may be the most important coach during this period before the Buckeyes take the practice field March 4th, Ryan Day has his own tasks to accomplish. Those include things like recruiting and developing his playbook.

He will also put a focus on incorporating OC Mike Yurcich into running his offense. New defensive coaches Greg Mattison, Jeff Hafley and Al Washington will work on their schemes to execute, first during spring practices and then at the Spring Game.
Once practices begin on March 4th, coach Day will begin to evaluate his team and determine the early depth chart, which we expect to see before the Spring Game. He and his coaching staff will work to prepare the players, predominately the early enrollees, to play in front of 80,000 or more passionate fans.
The Buckeyes will work out as many shortcomings as possible before the Spring Game. Then the coaching staff will evaluate players and determine the changes needed before the beginning of fall camp.
Before April 13th we can expect the new players and coaches to get acclimated and new and unique playbooks to be developed. That will result in a stronger and more talented team taking the field at the Shoe for the Spring Game.
