The Ohio State football team will look to give legendary head coach Urban Meyer a proper send off in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day.
Legendary Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer has a saying he often uses around his program, especially in big games. A phrase that poetically rings throughout the city of Columbus as a directive from their fearless leader. Meyer commands, “When I need you the most, you give me your very best.”
Back in 2011, the Buckeyes finished the season with an abysmal 6-7 record following the aftermath of poor decision-making of former players the year prior leading to a coaching change.
In stepped Urban Meyer which immediately changed the air in the state of Ohio. Meyer wasted no time getting off to an undefeated 12-0 season in 2012 and later stretching that streak to 24 games.
In 2014, Meyer put forth one of the greatest coaching performances in the history of the sport en route to winning the inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship Game.
Ohio State accomplished the feat by overcoming hellacious adversity on all fronts, namely injuries, an early season loss and the death of a player.
Over the next two years, the Buckeyes saw more success as Meyer officially had built a juggernaut. Ohio State had now won at least eleven games in each of Meyer’s first five seasons.
That trend would continue as the Buckeyes would go on to win back to back Big Ten Championships in 2017 and 2018 while also beating That Team Up North for the seventh straight time in the process.

Ohio State currently sits at 12-1 with the Rose Bowl still to play against PAC-12 Champion Washington. The Buckeyes will have a chance to win thirteen games yet again under Meyer who is going for his 84th win as Ohio State head coach.
Moreover, this game is different as it will be the final time the legend takes the field as a head coach before retirement. Meyer has always dreamed about coaching in Pasadena in the ‘Granddaddy of Them All’ and now he will get his chance.
The players are laser focused and motivated to send their beloved head coach into retirement with a win. Expect the Buckeyes to encore their late season performances against That Team Up North and Northwestern.
Meyer has given the great state of Ohio, as he calls it, The Ohio State University and Buckeye Nation everything he has had for the past seven years.
There is no way to payback Coach Meyer for all he has done for his players, staff and Buckeye Nation. But properly sending him off with a win in Pasadena would be a great way of saying thank you.
Though it is Meyer’s mantra for his players, staff members and fans, it is safe to say that when we, Ohio State and Buckeye Nation needed Coach Meyer the most he gave us his very best.
