Ohio State Football: Milestones to be reached in the Rose Bowl
Running backs and receivers on the Ohio State football team could reach or exceed the marks of Buckeye greats from the past.
Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins has garnered a lot of attention setting numerous school and Big Ten records. As a result, the numbers running backs and wide receivers have been putting up have went somewhat under the radar, even though they rival those of outstanding Buckeye skill position players in the past.
During the Rose Bowl there could be milestones matched or exceeded by Ohio State running backs and / or wide receivers.
Let’s first take a look at some of the best seasons by Buckeye running back duos and compare them to the numbers J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber may total by the end of the season.
1975
- Archie Griffin: 1,450 yards rushing, 1,620 total yards
- .Pete Johnson: 1,059 yards rushing, 1,085 total yards
1989
- Carlos Snow: 990 yards rushing, 1,174 total yards
- Scottie Graham: 977 yards rushing, 1,092 total yards
2016 You could include Mike Weber (1,187 total yards) and Curtis Samuel (1,656) to the list as well although the majority of Samuel’s yards came on receptions.
Now what the current running backs have accomplished so far this season.
- J.K. Dobbins: 1,029 yards rushing, 1,277 total yards
- Mike Weber: 858 yards rushing, 962 total yards
Weber only needs 38 yards rushing and receiving during the Rose Bowl and he and Dobbins will be the third running back duo to have 1,000 yards from scrimmage in the same season. If he rushes for 142 yards they will be the second RB combo to have 1,000 yards on the ground.
If Weber hits the mark in total offense it will be the first time a trio of non-quarterbacks will have had 1,000 yards from scrimmage in the same season. Parris Campbell has 1,016 rushing and receiving yards already.
And Campbell will almost certainly join an elite group during the Rose Bowl as he only needs 8 receiving yards to hit the 1,000 yard mark.

Here is the list of Ohio State receivers who have had 1,000 receiving seasons and / or 1,000 yards from scrimmage.
- 1998: David Boston 1,435 yards receiving – 1,436 yards from scrimmage
- 1995: Terry Glenn 1,411 – 1,444
- 2002: Michael Jenkins 1,076
- 1993: Joey Galloway 946 – 1,004
To top things off, if K.J. Hill has at least 72 receiving yards during the Rose Bowl, it will be the first time two Ohio State players have had 900 yards receiving in the same season.
Dwayne Haskins only needs 212 total yards and 420 yards passing to hit the 5,000 yard mark in those categories. He is certainly capable of achieving both of those milestones.
These current Ohio State players have the opportunity to match or surpass some of the Buckeye greats from the past statistically. Those would be amazing feats when you consider all of the talented players who have come through the Ohio State football program over the years.
