Ohio State Basketball: Wesson brothers’ improvement and No. 13 ranking
The Ohio State basketball team is ranked No. 13 in the latest AP Poll in large part due to the improved play of Kaleb and Andre Wesson.
Kaleb Wesson’s play the last two games earned him Big Ten Player of the Week honors and was a big reason the Ohio State basketball team moved up two spots to No. 13 in the AP Poll. The sophomore center scored 31 points against Youngstown State and followed that up with a 15 point, 12 rebound performance in the 80-66 victory over UCLA.
Even though his older brother Andre isn’t as heralded, his improvement has been an important component in the Buckeyes’ success as well.
Nearly all of the junior’s stats have improved this season. Andre didn’t average 3.0 points per game in either of his first two seasons but is scoring at a 7.2 clip so far.
His overall play, doing the dirty work on defense, hitting the boards and distributing the ball have been important even though it sometimes doesn’t show up on the stat sheets. And his toughness is unquestioned.
After reportedly losing three teeth going after a loose ball recently, Andre came back in quickly, jump-started the team and finished the game.
The scoring balance, along with the effort each of the players bring to the court every game, are the reasons why the Buckeyes are off to a terrific start. But the progress the Wesson brothers have made since last season have certainly added to Ohio State’s success so far.
As a result, the Buckeyes are ranked No. 13 in the country and few would have expected that to be the case at this point of the season.
In case you missed it, here is this week’s AP Poll . Once again the Big Ten is well represented with six teams in the top 25.

Ohio State will be hosting High Point this Saturday. One week later the Buckeyes will resume their conference schedule against the Michigan State Spartans. That should be an excellent matchup and could be when the race for the Big Ten regular season title begins.
