For most of the season Tua Tagovailoa was the favorite to win the Heisman but with a strong finish Kyler Murray hoisted the  trophy.

Quarterbacks Kyler Murray, Tua Tagovailoa and Dwayne Haskins had terrific seasons and all were deserving of the invite to the Heisman ceremony. With a strong surge at the end Murray was awarded the coveted Trophy.

The Oklahoma quarterback was having a strong season heading into the eighth game but Tagovailoa was the favorite to win the Heisman at that point.  Murray then picked his game up another notch during the win over Kansas State.

He passed for 352 yards and 3 touchdowns, ran for 46 yards and another score and stayed on a roll the rest of the season. The last five games, including the Big 12 Championship Game, Murray totaled at least 400 yards from scrimmage in all but one, a 361 yard performance in a win over Kansas.

Against the Texas Longhorns he passed for 379 yards and 3 scores, ran for 39 more and led the Sooners to the conference title and a berth in the College Football Playoff. Unfortunately for Tagovailoa, that same day he had a sub-par performance in the SEC Championship Game before leaving the game due to an injury.

That was enough to sway many Heisman voters to cast their ballots for Murray. Both players had outstanding seasons but the late surge by the Oklahoma QB enabled him to win the trophy.

Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins put up huge passing numbers and finished third in the balloting. However, he may not have been invited to the Heisman ceremony if not for his performances the last two games of the season.

It’s hard to believe a quarterback who threw for over 3,600 yards and 36 touchdowns the first 11 games of the season wouldn’t be a lock to go to New York. But some thought that may have been the case.

After passing for 396 yards and 6 touchdowns during “The Game” against the No. 1 defense in the country and 499 yards with 5 scores in the Big Ten Championship Game, Haskins’ invitation was secured.
