As the Ohio State football team prepares for the Big Ten Championship game I take a look at the similarities to the National Championship season.

It was 2014 as I sat in a Miami hotel room watching what I thought at the time was the last hope of the Buckeyes making it to the first ever College Football Playoff. Of course that year the Ohio State football team went on to win the championship.

This year I sat in a sports bar and watched the Purdue Boilermakers dismantle the Buckeyes and I once again thought their chance of making the CFP was gone. There was no way Ohio State was going to beat TTUN and all hope was abandoned.

The Buckeyes may prove me wrong once again. The huge win over TTUN put Ohio State right back into the playoff mix.

What do the Buckeyes need to get in? The same thing they needed in 2014, a huge win over their opponent in the Big Ten Championship Game.

More from Ohio State Football

In 2014, the 59-0 win over Wisconsin convinced the committee to include Ohio State in the playoff. If the Buckeyes can do the same thing against the Northwestern Wildcats, and show the committee that they are now a different team than they were in October, they can steal that fourth spot.

After that, it will simply be history repeating itself. We would play Alabama in the first round if the top three stay the same. We will be huge underdogs and the majority of the country will question why we are even in the final four.

Urban Meyer thrives off of being the underdog and will get his boys ready to play. With a big armed quarterback who can air it out, Ohio State will face an Alabama team that really hasn’t been tested all year long.

This all seems to sound familiar because it is unfolding just like the 2014 championship run. Possibly the huge win against TTUN was all the Buckeyes needed to change their fortunes.

If they can shock and awe the CFP Committee one more time, don’t be surprised if we are holding the trophy at the end of what was looking like a disappointing season.
