Ohio State Football: Dwayne Haskins wins Big Ten award, snubbed nationally
By Chris Bruns
A record-shattering season was enough for Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins to win all kinds of hardware in the conference. It wasn’t enough for one national award.
Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and Big Ten Quarterback of the Year on Wednesday.
The conference announced its postseason awards based on voting by coaches and the media.
Haskins, who threw for 4,081 yards and 42 touchdowns and shattered league records in a spectacular season, was also named first team All Big Ten on both coach and media lists. He was joined by WR Parris Campbell on the coaches list, and OT Isaiah Prince on both.
But Haskins’ achievements, including four 400-yard passing games six touchdown passes in multiple games, weren’t enough to earn a place among Walter Camp award finalists.
That list of the nation’s best players included 4 quarterbacks: West Virginia’s Will Grier, Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa, Washington State’s Gardner Minshew, and Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray, along with Kentucky linebacker Josh Allen.
Tagovailoa is considered the runaway Heisman favorite with Murray a close second. Minshew and Grier have been on the awards shortlist all season, though losses last week were thought to have hurt their chances. Meanwhile, Haskins’ demolition of the nation’s top passing defense last week seems not to have boosted his standing in the eyes of national voters.

Just as the Haskins Heisman hype died off after the Purdue loss, his presence on national watch lists was likely hurt by the team’s performance in that game. But each of the Camp finalists aside from Tua has a loss as well.
While the Camp award finalists are set in stone, the Heisman finalists will be announced on December 3rd. Tagovailoa and Murray are thought to be locks to be invited to the ceremony in New York, while the two other quarterbacks on this list are locked in a tight battle with Haskins for the third spot.
Here are how the stats for all five quarterbacks stack up:
Haskins: 314/455 passing, 69.0%. 4,081 yds, 42 TDs, 7 INT. 127 rushing, 4 TDs. 171.7 rating
Murray: 216/306 passing, 70.6%. 3,674 yds, 37 TDs, 7 INT. 853 rushing, 11 TDs. 206.8 rating.
Grier: 266/397 passing, 67%. 3,864 yds, 37 TDs, 8 INT. -90 rushing, 3TDs.175.5 rating.
Tagovailoa:189/269 passing, 70.3%. 3,189 yds, 36 TDs, 2 INT. 211 rushing, 5 TDs. 212.5 rating.
Minshew: 433/613 passing, 70.6%/ 4,477 yds, 36 TDs, 9 INT. 103 rushing, 3 TDs. 148.4 rating.
With the way Haskins has performed this season, and with the Buckeyes in the playoff hunt, it would be a shame if he wasn’t invited to the Heisman Trophy ceremony.
