3 quarterbacks in Heisman race heading into Championship Weekend
Kyler Murray:
Despite the atrocious Sooners defense, Kyler Murray continues to keep the Sooners in the playoff hunt. In an offensive shootout, 59-56 win against West Virginia, Murray had over 450 yards of total offense including 4 total touchdowns.
His performance resulted in his eighth 300 yard passing game this season.
Murray may be the most dynamic player in college football. But are his statistics inflated this season due to the horrendous Big 12 defenses that he’s been facing?
Whatever the case, Murray will have one more chance to impress the Heisman voters as Oklahoma takes on Texas in the Big 12 Championship this weekend.
Tua Tagovailoa:
In the Iron Bowl victory, Tagovailoa passed for 324 yards and 5 touchdowns and ran for another score. The Alabama quarterback has received Heisman praise all season long and deservedly so.
However, heading into this weekend there is no guarantee that Tagovailoa has clinched the Heisman. The other two quarterbacks have arguably outperformed him this season.
As the regular season finished last weekend, Tagovailoa, Murray and Haskins have carried their teams into their respective conference championships with their College Football Playoff hopes still in sight. Below you will see regular season statistics of the 3 Heisman contenders.

Tagovailoa:
- Passing Yards 3189, 36 TDs, 2 INTs
- Rushing Yards 211, 5 TDs
Murray:
- Passing Yards 3674, 37 TDs, 7 INTs
- Rushing Yards 853, 11 TDs
Haskins:
- Passing Yards 4081, 42 TDs, 7 INTs
- Rushing Yards 127, 4 TDs
Clearly Haskins leads the pack in passing yards and passing touchdowns. On the other hand, Murray is the clear-cut better rusher among the three.
The Heisman Trophy is awarded to the most outstanding player in college football. Based solely on statistics, I think Murray and Haskins have the edge over Tagovailoa.
Regardless of what the Heisman votes value in their decision-making, Tagovailoa, Murray and Haskins will each have one last shot to prove themselves in their Conference Championships on Saturday. Heisman voters should pay close attention to see how these three perform in championship environments before they cast their votes.
