Ohio State Football: CFP Committee fine with OU defense but not OSU’s?
The Ohio State football team defeated the No. 4 ranked Michigan Wolverines Saturday but it wasn’t enough to move past Oklahoma in the rankings.
Ohio State jumped 4 spots to No. 6 in this week’s CFP ratings and Oklahoma moved up to No. 5. Apparently a 62-39 victory over the No. 4 team in the country wasn’t as impressive as a 59-56 win in over West Virginia.
The CFP Committee often says they look at a team’s total body of work but also evaluates them by how they have played recently. If that is the case, the fact that the Oklahoma defense has given up at least 40 points in each of the last four games is just fine but Ohio State’s struggles on that side of the ball isn’t.
Don’t believe me? Check out what Rob Mullens, College Football Playoff Selection Committee chair, had to say when answering questions about the situation per constantcontact.com.
"Q. How much question is there still about Ohio State’s defense in particular?ROB MULLENS: We look at the full body of work, of course. The defense played better against Michigan, but that still is probably the shortcoming. Their offense has been able to carry them.Q. You mentioned on the ESPN show the historic nature of this Oklahoma offense. What kind of discussions have you had about that subject, not how effective they are but historically they seem to be incredibly productive?ROB MULLENS: Well, obviously we watch the games, then we look at the résumé. We also look at the statistics. When you look at the numbers, while their defense has been a challenge, their offense has been superior. They find a way to win the games based on the talent that they have. That lines up that the offense carries them."
I guess it doesn’t matter to the committee that Oklahoma has given up over 47 points per game the last four weeks and the Ohio State defense has allowed around 32 ppg. And while the Sooner offense is the best in the nation, the Buckeyes come in at No. 2.
And for the body of work, Ohio State is 4-0 against ranked teams and Oklahoma is 1-1. Oh yeah, the Buckeyes beat the team that defeated the team that beat the Sooners.
Anyway, here is this week’s CFP top 25:
Alabama
Clemson
Notre Dame
Georgia
Oklahoma
Ohio State
Michigan
UCF
Florida

There you have it, the CFP top 25 and the challenge Ohio State has to make the playoff. With the way the Playoff Committee views the Sooners it will be an uphill battle for the Buckeyes if both teams win their conference championship games.
