Young players on the Ohio State basketball team are off to a great start this season which is promising for Chris Holtmann’s squad going forward.

The Ohio State basketball team is off to a 2-0 start after the decisive win over Purdue Fort Wayne last Sunday. Three freshmen had outstanding games and several young players have been instrumental in the Buckeyes getting off to a fast start this season.

Freshman Luther Muhammad got off on the right foot in the opener against Cincinnati. He scored 11 points, had 2 rebounds, 1 assist and a block. Against Purdue Fort Wayne, Muhammad had another double-digit scoring game but that only tells part of the story of how well he played. He had the difficult task of guarding Fort Wayne’s all-conference player John Konchar and held him to 13 points.

Duane Washington Jr. had a breakout game Sunday. After only scoring 3 points against Cincinnati, he dropped 20 on Fort Wayne shooting 7-11 from the field and 6-9 behind the arc.

Jaedon LeDee didn’t see action against the Bearcats but made the most of his 13 minutes of playing time against the Mastodons. He scored 16 points, had 4 blocks and 4 rebounds in his first game as a Buckeye.

The sophomores are playing well too.

Kaleb Wesson had a fine freshmen year and is off to a good start this season. He is averaging 11.5 points per game, 7 rebounds and 1.5 blocks. He is developing into a fine passer as well.

The sophomore who appears to have made the biggest improvement is Kyle Young. He is averaging 8.5 points and 5 rebounds and is a force on defense.

Musa Jallow hasn’t been a stat stuffer yet as he is only averaging 3.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. However, the sophomore has played excellent defense and it’s only a matter of time before he gets going on offense.

With coach Holtmann losing three starters from last year’s team it was thought it may take some time for the Buckeyes to gel. With the way the young players have contributed so far that hasn’t been an issue.

If the freshmen and sophomores continue to play at a high level this could be another fine season for Ohio State and the second year head coach.
