Ohio State 10th in first CFP Poll, what does that mean?
The first College Football Playoff poll came out tonight and it was bad news for Ohio State fans hoping that winning out would still be enough to make the four team tournament.
The top 10 in the CFP rankings are as follows.
- Alabama
- Clemson
- LSU
- Notre Dame
- Michigan
- Georgia
- Oklahoma
- Washington State
- Kentucky
- Ohio State
It is a shocking development to see the likes of Kentucky and Washington State cracking the top 10 and being ranked above Ohio State. The Buckeyes are coming off a loss where they looked bad in all facets of the game.
However, taking into consideration the talent that the Buckeye’s have on the field, and how they have rebounded from losses in the past, it is hard for me to believe that Washington State and Kentucky are better than the Buckeyes.
As for Ohio State’s chances, it looks bleak because of the fact Washington State and Oklahoma are both ahead of us. If both of these teams were to win out, it would tough to see a scenario where the Buckeyes jump either the Pac-12 champion or the Big 12 champion.
Not to mention they would still need to have Notre Dame lose at least once as well.
On top of all of this, Ohio State needs to win out as well and that includes beating Michigan State in Lansing as well as the number 5 team in the rankings, Michigan.

So to recap, the Buckeyes need two of three teams to lose before the final playoff rankings come out. Those three are Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Washington State.
I will also be rooting for the Crimson Tide as much as that will hurt. Alabama is the only team that could make the playoff without winning their conference this season, and of course the playoff committee would also have to include the SEC champion.
The Buckeyes could also do what they did in 2014 as well and just blow everyone out of the water. That would force the committee to jump the Buckeyes over other conference champions.
Either way, it’s an uphill battle from here on in for the Buckeyes, and only time will tell if that battle will become more winnable.
