One unit on the Ohio State football team nobody should be concerned about is the group of H-backs. Two could have 1,000 yard seasons.

While there are plenty of concerns on the Ohio State football team heading into the November stretch drive, the H-back unit isn’t one of them. In fact, Parris Campbell and J.K. Hill each have a chance of breaking the 1,000 yard barrier this season.

And the two combined for 101 receptions during the first eight games as well.

First take a look at what the fifth year senior Campbell has accomplished so far this season.

He got off to a poor start with 4 receptions for 22 yards against Oregon State but you knew Campbell wasn’t going to continue averaging 5.5 yards per catch. After that the only game he hasn’t had at least 5 receptions was the TCU game when he had 2 catches for 66 yards.

His two big games were against Tulane (8 receptions for 147 yards) and Indiana (9 receptions for 142 yards). He caught 2 TD passes in each game as well.

Campbell’s season totals:  52 receptions for 600 yards and 7 touchdowns.

Hill began the season hot with 6 receptions for 82 yards and stayed on a roll. He had 4 catches against Tulane and Indiana but at least 5 in every other game.

The last two games he has been on fire. He caught nine passes in each and had 187 receiving yards with 2 touchdowns against Minnesota and 105 yards against Purdue.

And he proved he had sticky fingers in week 7.

Hill’s season totals: 49 receptions for 656 yards and 4 touchdowns.

More from Ohio State Football

More important than his stats is the fact Hill is the guy who can get open and make a crucial catch. He is one of the best in college football when it comes to moving the chains.

The two H-backs are on pace to put up outstanding totals this season. I’ll project it out for a 13 game season because the Buckeyes are assured of playing at least one postseason game and two if they make the Big Ten Championship Game.

Campbell:  85 receptions for 975 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Hill:  80 receptions for 1,066 yards and 7 touchdowns.

Hill is on pace for a 1,000 yard receiving season and Campbell is just a little behind. However, he could make up for that in any game with his big play ability.

The totals these star H-backs have put up are impressive to say the least. But the stats for the H-back unit are even more impressive when you add in C.J. Saunders’ (10 receptions for 73 yards) and Demario McCall’s (5 receptions for 46 yards).

The four H-backs have 116 receptions for 1375 yards and 11 touchdowns in 8 games. That projects out to 189 receptions for 2,234 yards and 18 touchdowns for the season. Those are ridiculous numbers.

There is no doubt there are things Urban Meyer needs to fix heading into the stretch drive of the season. But obviously he isn’t concerned with how the H-back unit will perform.
