Ohio State Football: Buckeyes No. 3, and 8 SEC teams in top 25?

The Ohio State football team struggled for three quarters against the Indiana Hoosiers but the Buckeyes are still ranked No. 3 this week.

Ohio State didn’t have an easy game against Indiana last Saturday so I expected the Buckeyes to drop a spot in the AP Poll with the Clemson Tigers winning in dominant fashion. While I was surprised Ohio State was still ranked No. 3 when the poll came out, I was even more so when I saw eight Southeastern Conference teams in the top 25.

Seriously, 32 percent of the top 25 teams in the country play in the same conference? Is that even possible?

I thought the Big Ten was the strongest conference in the country when the season began. With poor performances by several Big Ten teams, I think the SEC is the strongest conference now. But seriously, eight teams ranked in the top 25?

Auburn (21) and Texas A&M (22) don’t exactly have great resumes so far but you can at least make a case they should be included in the top 25. But look at Mississippi State’s season to date and compare it to Iowa’s.

Mississippi State’s signature win was a 23-9 victory over Auburn, who I’m no longer sold on, and the game was played in Starkville. Mississippi State’s other three wins were against Stephen A Austin (an FCS team whose only win was a 24-21 victory over Abilene Christian)), 2-4 Kansas State and the 2-3 Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns. Now that’s strong competition isn’t it?

Iowa on the outside looking in is 4-1 and for the most part has played big boy teams. At least all of them are allowed to have 85 scholarships because they are FBS schools.

Iowa had season wins over Northern Illinois and Northern Iowa. But the Hawkeyes also defeated their in state rival Iowa State Cyclones and Minnesota Gophers. And Minnesota’s only loss was to Maryland who defeated the No. 9 ranked Texas Longhorns.

Iowa’s only loss was to No. 15 Wisconsin.

I’m sure there are teams in other conferences you could make a strong case for to be included in the top 25 instead of Mississippi State or one of the other SEC teams but I don’t have the energy to check them out. Anyway, that’s my rant this week. If you missed the week 7 AP Poll here it is. You can click on the link if you want to see others who received votes.
