The Ohio State football team helped me get back on the winning track picking against the spread by scoring a late touchdown against Tulane.

My 5-4-1 record picking against the spread last week certainly isn’t anything to write home about but at least I had a winning week. My record for the season stands at 16-10-1.

The games this week are interesting.  Eight teams are playing at home and the other two are playing against top ten teams.

I can’t believe two SEC teams are playing non conference cupcakes this late in the season. What am I thinking, that’s always the case.

Anyway, here are my picks against the spread of games involving top ten teams week 5. Point spreads are from Oddsshark.com.

(1) Alabama by 39 over Southern Mississippi: The Tide let me down last week so I tried to think of a way they wouldn’t cover but I couldn’t. Alabama will win by at least 50.

(2) Georgia by 30.5 over Tennessee: I can’t believe Tennessee has fallen so far so fast. I still think the Vols will scratch out enough points in garbage time to keep it around a four touchdown win for the Bulldogs so I’ll take them and the points.

(3) Clemson by 25 over Syracuse: I don’t like the spread for this reason. Quarterback Kelly Bryant announced he is leaving the program with freshman Trevor Lawrence being named the starter. I wonder if that will disrupt the team chemistry for this week’s game. I’ll take Syracuse and the points.

(4) Ohio State vs. (9) Penn State: This is definitely the game of the week and the winner may be the team that has the ball last. I think it should be a tight game but Ohio State will cover.

(5) LSU by 10.5 over Mississippi: A difficult game to pick. At home LSU should win this game by three touchdowns but the Tigers don’t have a lot of offensive firepower. I’ll bet on the defense to hold down the Ole Miss scoring and take LSU and give the points.

(6) Oklahoma by 24 over Baylor: I predicted Oklahoma would have problems with Army last week and the Sooners certainly did. There will be a hangover Saturday as well so I’ll take Baylor and the points.

(8) Notre Dame by 5.5 over (7) Stanford: Interesting game and I don’t have a winner so I’ll just take Stanford and the points.

(10) Auburn by 27 vs. Southern Miss: This should be a blowout but Southern Miss can put up points so I’ll take the Golden Eagles and the points.
