With the success Urban Meyer has had while in charge of the Ohio State football program he should be paid more than the guy who coaches that team up north.

Urban Meyer is now locked in to coach the Ohio State football team through the 2022 season. It was announced today he has signed a two-year extension to his contract which makes him the highest paid coach in the Big Ten. Sorry Jim, Urban just beat you again.

Per 247Sports, Jim Harbaugh was the highest paid coach in the conference with a 7.5 million dollar annual salary. Urban Meyer will now earn 7.6 million per year.

I wish it would have been whatever coach Harbaugh makes plus one dollar, and here is why.

When I started following sports at both the college and pro levels, two great NBA centers Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell were in the midst of one of greatest rivalries ever. Chamberlain was drawing all the attention, setting scoring and rebounding records not matched to this day. However, Russell’s Celtics were winning championships and it was said he demanded to be paid one dollar more per year than Chamberlain made because of that.

Well, Jim Harbaugh’s team isn’t setting any records but he does draw a lot of attention to himself. Urban Meyer just goes about the business of winning titles so he should be paid more.

In fact, he has won 18 titles.

  • 2 Mountain West Conference
  • 2 SEC East Division
  • 2 Big Ten Leaders Division
  • 4 Big Ten East Division
  • 3 SEC Conference
  • 2 Big Ten Conference
  • 3 National

Now let’s take a look at the titles Jim Harbaugh has won.

  • 1 Pioneer Football League
  • 2 NFC West Division
  • 1 NFC Conference

Coach Harbaugh won titles in the pros and at the University of San Diego, an FCS school, but none in the FBS. All of coach Meyer’s have come in the big-time college division.

So why did Michigan sign Jim Harbaugh to such a huge contract? It was in the hope that he could bring the Wolverines back to the glory days when he was playing for them.

If he could accomplish that feat it would stop Ohio State’s dominance in the conference and in “The Game”. Did Michigan get the bang for their buck, or 7.5 million of them? Not hardly.

More from Ohio State Football

Just look at Ohio State and Michigan stats during the three years Jim Harbaugh has been the Wolverine’s head coach and you will see what I mean.

Ohio State has compiled a 35-5 record during that time, winning or sharing three Big Ten East Titles and a Big Ten Championship. The Buckeyes are 2-1 in postseason games and their one loss was to Clemson in the College Football Playoff following the 2016 season.

Michigan is 28-11 and hasn’t finished better than third place in the East division. The Wolverines are 1-2 in bowl games and have yet to make the College Football Playoff.

Ohio State is 3-0 in “The Game”. Ouch, you know that has to hurt Wolverine fans and the UM administration.

I know the amount Urban Meyer will be paid annually under his new contract is a statement from the powers that be at Ohio State. They are showing their appreciation for him winning titles while running an outstanding program, instead of shining the spotlight on himself. And even though 7.6 mil vs. 7.5 isn’t just one dollar more than the Michigan head coach earns, I’m sure Urban and his wife Shelley don’t mind the extra dough.
