Ohio State Football: Tate Martell deserves a shot to start at QB
With four-year starter J.T. Barrett on his way to the NFL, the quarterback battle at Ohio State is officially underway.
Dwayne Haskins was thrown into the fire last season when J.T. Barrett went down with a knee injury against rival Michigan, and passed his test with flying colors.
Haskins’ triumph may have seemed to solidify his role as the starting QB for the 2018-19 season, but things are just getting started.
Tate Martell, who will be going into his second season at Ohio State, could very well blow away the competition during the spring and summer sessions, much like he did throughout high school.

Martell is a born winner, and his high school numbers according to maxpreps.com back that up.
- 45-0 as a high school starter
- Three-time Nevada State Champion
- Over 7,500 career passing yards
- 113 passing touchdowns
- .603 career completion percentage
- Only nine interceptions on 652 passing attempts
- Nearly 2,300 rushing yards on 317 rushing attempts
- 35 rushing touchdowns
Numbers like this are a clear indicator as to what Martell can bring to the sometimes-inconsistent Buckeye offense.
Tate will have his opportunity to shine at Ohio State’s Spring Game on April 14. He utilized his opportunity at last year’s Spring Game by putting his athleticism on display to score on a designed draw.
Ohio State has a slew of talent at the quarterback position and Martell is a prime example of that.

Dwayne Haskins and Joe Burrow are the leading candidates to be the starter at the moment, and rightfully so because each has game experience. However, with his unique skill set and the intangibles he brings to the position, Tate Martell deserves to be given every opportunity to win the starting quarterback job.
