Ohio State Football: Ryan Day staying is good news with QB battle looming
Ryan Day deciding to stay at Ohio State is certainly good news with the battle for the starting quarterback position about to take place.
According to Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports, coach Ryan Day will be staying at Ohio State, receiving a promotion to offensive coordinator and calling the plays next season. It was widely reported Day was being courted by Mike Vrabel to become the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans. The fact he is staying at Ohio State is terrific news for head coach Urban Meyer.
With J.T. Barrett moving on there is going to be quite a battle at the quarterback position this spring. Who better to work with the three players in the mix than the coach who has been around them for a year who knows their strengths and weaknesses.
It could be especially important if Dwayne Haskins wins the starting job as many expect him to. Coach Day has had success working with NFL quarterbacks and Haskins is a pro style QB.
Outside of a three game run to the national title in 2014, most of Urban Meyer’s success as a head coach has come by using dual threat quarterbacks to run his offense. Chris Leak was a pro style QB at Florida, but the Gators wouldn’t have made their run to the title without packages put in for freshman Tim Tebow. Alex Smith was also a dual threat quarterback for coach Meyer at Utah.
Whoever wins the job will benefit by having coach Day guiding him, and the backups as well. The quarterbacks will have a terrific coach they are familiar with to go along with all of the top receivers in Zone 6 coming back.

Last season J.T. Barrett’s stats improved in almost every category. With coach Day returning, and him being familiar with Urban Meyer’s offense, I expect even bigger strides made in the Ohio State passing game next season.
