Ohio State Football: DE commit gives Buckeyes 10 top 100 players
Another outstanding commit for Urban Meyer’s Ohio State recruiting class.
When Tyreke Smith committed to play for the Buckeyes at the Under Armour All-America Bowl, it gave Urban Meyer yet another top 100 overall recruit in the 247Sports Composite. There are now 10 players in the 2018 Ohio State recruiting class with that distinction.
Smith is an important piece to the ‘18 recruiting class as Urban Meyer had to have at least one more defensive end commit. With Sam Hubbard, Tyquan Lewis and Jalyn Holmes moving on there are holes to fill at the position.
With Smith’s size and ability, it would appear he could be a part of the defensive end rotation right away. He is listed at 6-3, 260 pounds and is the No. 3 ranked WDE. He is also listed as the No. 60 player overall.

Here are the players ranked in the top 100 in the Ohio State recruiting class.
- Defensive tackle Taron Vincent (13)
- All-purpose back Jaelen Gill (24)
- Tight end Jeremy Ruckert (30)
- Inside linebacker Teradja Mitchell (40)
- Safety Tyreke Johnson (42)
- Center Matthew Jones (56)
- Defensive end Tyreke Smith (60)
- Wide receiver Kamryn Babb (66)
- Safety Josh Proctor (77)
- Running back Brian Snead (83)
Also, defensive tackle Antwuan Jackson was the No. 51 player in the country when he was a part of the 2016 Auburn recruiting class. He is ranked the No. 1 Junior college transfer this year.
Smith’s commitment moved Ohio State’s team ranking (304.89) closer to Georgia (310.94) who has the top recruiting class in the country. As I wrote in a previous article, I can’t figure why the Buckeyes aren’t ranked No. 1 since only Penn State (No. 4) has as many signed players by a team ranked in the top 10.
Hard commits are included in the rankings, but how solid are their commitments if they didn’t put pen to paper when they had the opportunity to do so during the early signing period.

The Buckeyes still lead the way with a 94.09 average player rating. However the final rankings shake out, Urban Meyer already has another outstanding recruiting class.
