Ohio State Buckeyes fans ranked No. 1 in Fandom 250

The results are in and Ohio State Buckeyes fans have been ranked the No. 1 college fans in the world in the 2017 edition of the FanSided Fandom 250.

Fans of the Ohio State Buckeyes can be proud as they were ranked the No. 1 fanbase in the FanSided Fandom 250. Ohio State fans weren’t just ranked above fans of other universities, the rankings included those who follow sports franchises, movies and television shows, and individual actors and athletes as well.

Since Scarlet & Game is a part of the FanSided network, you can imagine how proud those of us who contribute to S & G are that Buckeye fans were acknowledged as being the best. After all, we already knew they were the “Best Damn Fans in the Land”.

Taking a look at the criteria FanSided used to determine the rankings you can understand why “Buckeye Nation” was at the top:

"Over the course of a year, FanSided editors meet multiple times to discuss, study and rank fandoms. Weight is given to what is “hot” or buzzworthy over the course of the year. What happened in a calendar year is a large component of the equation. But fandoms get points for longevity, size and worth as well.The great equalizer to be what we call the “passion barometer.” The quality of a fandom is just as important to us as size and longevity."

I suggest you read the article by Mike Dyce at FanSided.com to see why it was determined Ohio State fans excelled in each of the categories mentioned above. If you do, you will see it was a no brainer that Ohio State Buckeyes fans were ranked No. 1.

Since I have followed Ohio State sports for 50 years, I have been aware fans are passionate about their Buckeyes for a long time. But I have gained an even greater appreciation for that passion since my first article for Scarlet & Game was published on June 3rd, 2015.

If I write a controversial article I know I will get plenty of responses. Buckeye fans are not afraid to let you know if they agree with you, or that you should move to that state up north. They are individual thinkers, often only agreeing on their love for the Buckeyes, and they are passionate.

And I now realize how extensive the Ohio State fanbase is after interacting with Buckeye fans from all over the country. When a speaker at my daughter’s commencement told the graduates that wherever they go expect to run into Ohio State fans, he was telling the truth.

Anyway, it’s great that FanSided did such a great job in determining which fanbase should be ranked No. 1. After doing so, the only conclusion they could come to is the one who cheers on the Scarlet and Gray, “The Best Damn Fans in the Land”.
