How many quarterbacks will be on the Ohio State roster next year?

When Matthew Baldwin committed to play for Ohio State yesterday, it brought the number of players in the recruiting class back up to 19. But it also raised questions about the quarterback position as well. First, let’s take a look at the newest recruit.

Baldwin is a three star recruit from Austin, Texas. He is ranked as the 17th best pro style quarterback and the No. 426 player in the nation. Don’t let the recruiting stats fool you, his stock has continued to rise of late.

That could have something to do with the fact that he has had a terrific senior season for one of the more successful high school football teams in Texas.

According to an article by Andrew Lind of ElevenWarriors, Baldwin has thrown for 3,397 yards for 41 touchdowns with just six interceptions this season. He also has rushed for 395 yards and 8 touchdowns. And he apparently plays for a school known to be a quarterback factory.

Mr. Lind pointed out that Lake Travis has produced several Division 1 quarterbacks, and one of them was Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield. He turned out to be a pretty good college player didn’t he?

Now for the questions at the quarterback position.

More from Scarlet and Game

Quarterback Emery Jones has been committed to play for the Buckeyes for quite some time but it has been speculated he may decommit and open his recruitment back up. Some think that could even happen this weekend if he chooses to do so. Does Baldwin’s commitment mean that is about to happen?

The second question has to do with the fact Baldwin is a pro style quarterback, a pass first guy who also has the ability to run just like Dwayne Haskins. Is Urban Meyer going to move away from the zone read being a big part of the Ohio State offense?

And just the fact that whether it’s one or two players added to the quarterback room, could it be too crowded for one guy? Joe Burrow has been biding his time to take over the reigns from JT Barrett, but again it looks like he could be the backup entering the 2018 season.

Would Burrrow come back for his fourth season to play behind Haskins with other younger players nipping at his heels, or head off to greener pastures?

It’s hard to say just how the quarterback situation for Ohio State will play out. But I think things are going to get interesting, and possibly very soon.
